Flanged Nut - Features And Applications

Flanged Nut:

A ‘Flanged Nut’ is a kind of ‘Fastener Nut’ that has a plate-like structure or a wide flange at one end & acts as a conjoint washer. This helps to distribute the pressure of the nut while securing the part, preventing the chance of damage to the part and stopping it from loosening when subjected to the rough surface.

The Flange nut is designed for special uses in assemblies where over fastening and vibrations could damage fastener and the part. These wide flange nuts have small serrations which hold with great friction or give a locking action. The nuts are commonly in a hexagonal shape that are made up of hardened steel and coated with Zinc.

Flange nuts are often provided with a swivel flange which helps in making an extra stability without affecting the product or material surface like a serrated flange nut. Swivel flange nuts are commonly used in joining plastic items or wooden pieces. In some cases both sides of the nut are serrated, allowing to get locked on either side.

The Features are:

1. Needs heavy force to loosen it than to tighten a flange nut.
2. Flange base distributes pressure evenly without damaging the product.
3. This nut acts as a conjoint washer.
4. The serrations on the nut prevent vibration & loosening.
5. Steel & zinc plated is a common material and finishing helps in preventing corrosion.

Coupling Nut - Features And Applications

Coupling Nut:

A ‘Coupling Nut’, also known as ‘Long Nut’ is a long threaded ‘Fastener-Nut’ used for joining two male threaded fasteners, most commonly a ‘Stud’ which is also a relatively long rod. The coupling fastener is a hex shaped nut that can be tightened & loosened with a handheld wrench.

These nuts are manufactured using a cold forged and hot forged technique depending on its applications. The coating used for these nuts is Electro-Zinc Plating, hot dip galvanizing; phosphate coating, silver plating, chrome plating and many other coatings are also done.

A Coupling Nuts length varies from 3mm to 20mm clearly giving a firm grip to the threaded rods. So these nuts are also called as ‘Extension Nuts.’

The Several types of the ‘Coupling Nuts’ are:

1. Left-handed Nuts: These are used to make long joints from a shorter length of the studs using coupling nuts.
2. Sight Hole Nuts: A hole on the side of a nut allows visual verification that the threads are engaged.
3. Reducing Long Nuts: This kind of nut has a bigger end and a smaller end at the fastener that allows joining of two different size thread bolts.

A ‘Coupling Nut’ is internal finely gripped threads that hold the threaded rods or studs significantly overcoming the compressive stress in the two mating threads and a tensile strength in the coupling nut without loosening over the time period. Also, they are available in the various metal forms such as Brass, Stainless steel & Aluminium.

The Features of Coupling Nut are:

1. Greatly customized with higher dimensional accuracy.

T-Nut - Features And Applications

T-Nut:

A ‘T-Nut’ or ‘Tee-Nut’ is a type of ‘Fastener’ used to fasten wooden materials, workpiece or to join composite materials, leaving a smooth surface. T-nut is also known as ‘Insert nut’ or ‘Rivet nut’ or Blind nut.

This nut has a long, thin circular or square body and flange at one end, resembling a T in structure. The flange structure may vary from nut to nut. Some have a smooth finish, while others have sharp hooks or claws on the prongs that insert into the wood as the bolt is fastened from the opposite side of the piece, thus giving a better confinement.

These nuts have better been fixing than normal screws, where screws fail to hold the wooden material. After installing a nut, a common suitable bolt is used to join matching parts together. In general, T-nuts are more productive than wood screws. They give the firm holding the bolt and material, less likely to cause splits or crack in any type of wood.

The advantage of using T-nut is that parts can be mass-produced, assembled and reassembled for transportation. These nuts withstand movement & vibration as they have sharp prongs that grip material-piece, such as cardboard, thus superior to wood screws, which tend to strip.

The Features Of T Nut are:

1. It is Zinc plated so less corrosive.
2. It is designed to fit along a T-slot track on a workbench or machine table.
3. High-quality steel.
4. Available in various sizes and specifications.

A form-C, the washer has a large diameter & normal thickness designed to be slid in & out of its place on a bolt. It acts as a wear pad, locking device, spacer, spring, load indicating washer, and to cut vibration.

C-washer or generally all washers are used in between a nut and bolt. Almost all the washers have an outer diameter (OD) about twice their inner diameter (ID), but sometimes vice versa. Flat C-Washer’s giving stability to bolts or screws by providing a bearing surface, thus preventing the fasteners from loosening when subjected to stress or pressure pulling through the material. They also fill the excess space between the bolt and the nut, thus giving a perfect tightening grip.

The Features are:

1. Higher Corrosion resistance.
2. Suitable for all types of nuts & bolts,
3. Provides a smooth surface & tight fastening between the nut & bolt.
4. These washers give stability & prevent vibration of fasteners.

About Rotary Hammer And Its Advantages And Applications

Rotary Hammer:

The ‘Rotary Hammer’ is a kind of ‘Power Tool’ also called as ‘Combi-Drills’ where the Drillbit is pounded in & out while the chuck is rotating. The hammering action is done by the use of a special Piston mechanism instead of a Clutch. A Piston delivers a powerful hammer punch on the surface, making deeper and bigger holes at faster rates.

A ‘Rotary Hammer tool’ uses a special Drillbit that delivers such an adequate hammer force that a normal masonry bit can’t. The Rotary hammer blows up to 10 times faster in the wall or concrete, depending on the drill bit size. In short, it is more durable than hammer drills.

Rotary Hammer requires extra-solid slotted drive chucks system or ‘Slotted Drive Shank’ (SDS) chuck and bit, or for the bigger SDS Plus, SDS MAX, or SDS spline chuck and bit, so that the bit can quickly transfer the blowing force of the ‘electro-pneumatic’ hammering action to the working surface.

The Rotary hammer is available in both corded (Electric powered) and cordless (Battery powered). There are three robust rotary hammer models, which operate in,

1. Hammer.
2. Drill.
3. Hammer-and-Drill.

Rotary Hammer operates more efficiently and is comparatively more expensive than hammer drills. Their bit typically ranges in size from 7/8 inch up to 2 1/2 inch breaker hammers or higher. Unlike another tool the rotary hammer quietly operates at lower RPM, but tender faster drilling rate.

The Advantages Of The Rotary Hammer Are:

1. They are available in both Vertical & Horizontal rotary hammers.
2. The power rating ranges from 450-2000 watts for various hammering activities.
3. The peripheral handle with the grooved grip provides max control & comfort.
4. A Speed of the rotary hammer can be controlled by speed switching controller.
5. Anti-vibration system helps in handling tool & work properly.

The Applications Of The Rotary Hammer Are:

1. In the Masonry works.
2. In Construction works
3. In Demolition  activities.
4. In Drilling the holes in woods, metals, walls.
5. In the breaking off-chip concrete and big rocks.

An Article About Flange Nuts - Advantages And Applications

Flange Nut:

A ‘Flange Nut’ is a type of ‘Fastener’ that has a wide ‘Flange’ base attached or a ‘Washer-like’ base to distribute the load pressure of the nut over a uniform surface area and ensure the joint of the fastener. The Flange Nut is usually in a hexagonal shape, commonly used in setting up assembly lines where work is speeded by using a single fastener instead of a Nut and washer.

The attached flange at one end of a nut acts as a unified and non-rotatable washer. These are special kind of fasteners that circulate the pressure of the nut over the part being secured, minimizing the damage to the part making it less likely to loosen as a result of an irregular fastening surface.

Some flange nut may be serrated to provide a better locking activity. The serrations are angled at certain positions such that they keep the nut locked and prevent it from rotating in the direction that would loosen the nut. The serrations on the nut must be used on a plain surface and not on the irregular surfaces.

The Some Of The Advantages of the Flange Nuts are:

1. Needs a greater amount of torque to loosen than to tighten the flange nut.
2. Enlarged flange base circulates heavy pressure evenly giving a secure hold.
3  There is no need of the additional washer to fasten the nut.
4. Reduce the bearing stress on the joint.
5. It acts as a locking nut by overcoming the vibrations.

The Applications of the Flange Nuts are:

1. Assembling of Automotive parts.
2. In Marine applications.

About An Article Related To Characteristics Of The Commodity Brass:

Mechanical Characteristics Of Brass:

The Brass is a metal which has some unique composition and is mainly composed of ‘Copper’ and ‘Zinc’. Copper is the main component, and brass is usually classified as a copper alloy. The percentage of ‘Zinc’ gives the color to the brass; the more percentage of Zinc, the lighter the color will be. Usually the color of brass differs from darkish red brown to a light silvery yellowish. The Brass is harder and stronger than copper.

It is easy to form into various shapes or very ductile, Its ductility is further improved with addition of Aluminum in its chemical composition. Brass is an extremely Good Conductor of heat and electricity due to its Copper content. Brass can be used in Heat Exchanges, refrigeration.

It is resistant to corrosion from salt water through its Zinc content, The resistance to corrosion could be further enhanced by adding chromium. Brass being resistant to Corrosion can be used in Plumbing applications, weather-stripping, Marine applications, screws, radiators, musical instruments, and cartridge casings for firearms.

Raw Materials:

The main component of brass is ‘Copper’; the amount of copper varies from 55% and 95% by density depending on the type of brass and its intended use. The Brass which contains high amount copper are obtained from process called “Electrically refining”, which is atleast to 99.33% pure to decrease or lessen the presence of other materials. Another method of getting out the Copper is from scrap of Copper alloy.

While using the recycled scrap, the amount of percentages of copper and other alloy materials in the scrap must be known to the manufacturer so that he can manage the percentages of materials to be added in order to achieve the needed brass composition.

Enhancement of Corrosion Resistance in Brass:

The second component of brass is zinc. The percentage of zinc varies from 5% and 40% by density depending on the type of brass. Brasses with higher percentages of zinc are stronger and harder, but they are also more difficult to form and is used to prevent corrosion, However there are other elements which can further improve corrosion resistance.

Arsenic and antimony are sometimes added to brasses that contain more than 20% zinc in order to inhibit corrosion. Chromium enhances corrosion resistance to a maximum.

Application Engineering through Optimal Selection of Brass:

The conventional naming for different Brass types is commonly reflected either through the color material or through its intended use. Let us take some example, the yellow brass contained 35% zinc and had a yellowish color, while the red brass contains 15% zinc and had a reddish color.

The Cartridge brass which contains 30% of zinc was used to make firearm cartridges. Whereas the Naval brass had up to 39.7% of zinc and were used in several applications on ships. As, Zinc provides the needed Corrosion protection needed when brass component is exposed to salt water.

Unfortunately, scattered among the traditional brass names were a number of misnomers. Brass with 10% zinc was called commercial bronze. These brasses are harder and more resistance to corrosion can be brazed or soldered. Its appealing color makes it to be used in Door Knobs, Kick Plates. It can be also used in valves and marine applications.

In US a unique method called “Unified Numbering System” is used to specify for metal and alloys. In this system an alphabetical letter is used – for example in this case the letter “C” is used for Copper, as of brass is a copper alloy- succeeded by five digits. The Chemical composition in the Brass makes them appropriate for being shaped into the end product by using mechanical methods like forging or rolling, these are called as ‘Wrought Brasses’. Here the first digit of their designation is I through 7. A Brass whose chemical configuration makes them appropriate for being shaped into end product by flowing into a mold are called ‘Cast Brasses’, and the first digit of their designation will be 8 or 9.

Brass Pipe Plug:

The ‘Brass Pipe Plug’ is made of high quality raw brass material for higher strength, better durability, lead-free and corrosion resistant. These Plugs are able to handle higher pressure applications and temperature. It features a hexagonal head and male thread end. The threaded pipe plug fitting with male thread ends is used to close the end of a pipe having female threads. These plugs are recommended for use with brass, copper or iron pipe for creating a seal and close off pipe ends in oil and natural gas, water and airlines, gasoline, vacuum and grease.

The Brass plugs are used as stopper to the end of a pipe or a pipe fitting that has a female thread. The Pipe Plugs are generally made of Cast Iron, Brass and Malleable Iron. Commonly four-sided or squared head countersunk head Plug is used for smaller size; a hexagonal head Plug is used for the larger sizes. The normal sizes of Plug range from 1/8th inch to 12 inches, included.

These Plugs give are machined to a remarkable tolerance level, with firm threads for increased strength that prevents from leakage, entry of air, moisture and dirt particles.

Again a Pipe plug can have increased capability to handle pressure using teflon, viton seals and plugs can also be made robust by improving its capability to prevent corrosion by choosing alloys or material higher on zinc, Chromium content.
